Mavradoxa recently released their first full-length album entitled “Sojourners.” The aptly titled album will definitely let you reside inside it for a while. It takes you away to a new place while it’s playing. Mavradoxa is from Rochester, New York, a city surrounded by woods and water, so it comes as no surprise that the music gives you that exact feeling. Dense forests and frozen Lake Ontario come to mind through vivid atmospheres painted by the guitars. The guitar work on this album is very interesting for a black metal album. Instead of your traditional tremolo riffs and blast beats, Mavradoxa opts for mid-tempo plodding guitar riffs that seem to fit somewhere between Agalloch and Alcest. In fact, Mavradoxa uses tremolo so infrequently that it really highlights those melodies when they do finally break out. Those melodic tremolo riffs wind their way into your head and stick there long after the album is done. In general the band sounds extremely in sync. Many times the guitar work is so tied to the drumming that it offers additional freedom for the bass to wander and bring in very memorable bass lines instead of being drowned out like so many black metal bands chose to do or being forced to accompany the drumming the entire album. If you’re looking to get sucked into a black metal forest Mavradoxa’s “Sojourners” is an album you need to check out. This is definitely a band to watch out for if their first album is this immersive, powerful, and polished.

Glen and Precipice by Deafest

On February 23rd 2016, Deafest released "Glen and Precipice" their fourth full-length album. As some of you may or may not know, Deafest, a black metal group from Colorado, United States; is all about nature, and the landscapes that portray true beauty. This new release starts off strong with the pure raw Deafest sound we've all come to know and love, while carrying a new kind of clarity that previous releases may not have been so prevalent with. If you take the time to listen through Deafest's entire discography you'll hear the transformations just as you've seen nature change, and the earth change with each passing day. Chase of Deafest is very much an active member in The Black Metal Alliance, as well as The Dark Skies Above Us, which I can say I've had the honor and the privilege of working alongside him with TDSAU's Resistance Anti-NSBM Compilation Volume IV, as well as the BMA's Crushing Intolerance Volume III. Truly a great musician, but most importantly a great person. Now to return from my digression; "Glen and Precipice" is an astound work of art, that I hold very close to my heart, there are so many emotions captured within the riffs of this short masterpiece. I very much truly mean masterpiece as well; this album will take you on an emotional journey through the valleys, "Hollers" over mountain tops soaring high into the bright sunlight to leave you back down in the valley in the furthest reaches from the warmth of the sun. Where your heart will ache and mourn for our beautiful earth, as you sit back and watch humanity destroy the one thing they have left; then when the chords and the atmosphere lifts your spirits again, you'll sit high above the mountain tops at one with nature. Listen to its tale of humanity's destruction of the earth, listen to its heartbreak as we destroy the only habitat we have. Witness the miracle that Fungi and other molds perform every day as they break down civilization's wastes, and landscapes; watch mother nature take back what's rightfully hers. Evergreen Refuge has really spoken volumes in this piece. In all their volumes a deep-rooted message exists, when asked what this message is Dylan Rupe of Evergreen Refuge replied, The vision of Evergreen Refuge is to connect myself and the listener to the wildness from which civilization has strayed us away from. It is a deep journey into the heart--into the the evolution--of the human animal. Η μπάντα αναβαθμίζεται ακόμα μια φορά, γράφοντας 6 ποιοτικότατες συνθέσεις, που ακολουθούν το ρεύμα του γρήγορου, συμπαγούς και ατμοσφαιρικού μοντέρνου post-black metal της αμερικάνικης σκηνής. Transcendencia​.​.​. Destrucción Entero is a short esoteric journey of destruction and creation of the I. A melancholic tune with violent outbursts, expressed with, excellent in their style, vocals filled with soul agony. The band claims bands like Silencer, Corrupted, This Will Destroy You..., Arizmenda, Lantlos and Mortifiera to be its influences. Fantastic release, especially recomended to introspective and contemplating metalheads.

Πρέπει να έχω ακούσει αυτό το δίσκο, πάνω από 100 φορές μέσα σε ένα μήνα. Πρόκειται απλά για instrumental αριστούργημα, υψηλής Τέχνης. Οι Deafest ξεκινούν με ένα τραγούδι ανάβαση. Κλιμακωτή ένταση που φτάνει στην ηρεμία, στην κορφή του βουνού. Συνεχίζουν με ένα καλοπαιγμένο πέρασμα στο καλύτερο κομμάτι της πλευράς τους, με έναν εξαιρετικό συνδιασμό του κιθαριστικού riff και του tempo του μπάσου και των drums. To Rising from the Ridgeline, είναι από εκείνα τα κομμάτια που σου κολάει ο σκελετός της μελωδίας του στο κεφάλι, για μήνες. Οι γνωστοί μας από παλαιότερα posts Evergreen Refuge, δεν είναι κατώτεροι των περιστάσεων. Μπαίνουν δυναμικά μέ ένα φανταστικό κομμάτι που χαρακτηρίζεται καλύτερα ως πένθιμο εμβατήριο της Φύσης. Συνεχίζουν με το αξιοπρεπέστατο Beyond the Mountains για να φτάσουν και αυτή στην κορύφωση με το αριστούργημα And it Begins Anew... Σίγουρα μια από τις καλύτερες underground black metal κυκλοφορίες που έχω ακούσει μέχρι στιγμής για φέτος.

I have probably listened to this album for more than 100 times this month. This is an instrumental masterpiece of higher Art. Deafest start with a climbing song. Escalating tension that reaches total serenity on the mountain top. They go on with a well executed passing to the best song of their side, with an excellent combination of a great guitar riff with the bass and drums ' tempo. Rising from the Ridgeline is one of these songs whose melody is stuck inside your head for months. Evergreen Refuse, who have been featured here in older posts, are not falling behind. They begin strongly with a great song which would be best described as a funeral anthem of Nature. The go on with the really good Beyond the Mountains to reach their own peak, with the masterpiece And it Begins Anew... Definitely one of the best releases that i have heard so far, this year.

Από τα μεσοδυτικά της Αμερικής μας έρχονται οι Welkin Dusk .Όνομα, που κατά το ½ μας θυμίζει αγαπημένο άλμπουμ των Emperor. Τα φωνητικά του  Louis νομίζω ότι ταιριάζουν με αυτά του Ihsahn. Θα μπορούσα να πω, πως ο δίσκος είναι άκοσμος και αυτό με ικανοποιεί ιδιαίτερα. Το ταλέντο του δίσκου είναι ο Mike, παίζει σωστά όλα τα βραχύρυθμα  και τα ταχύρυθμα σημεία του δίσκου με περίσσια ευκολία. Παρ’ όλα αυτά τα υπόλοιπα δυο μελή δεν αντιμετωπίζουν δυσκολία στο να ακολουθούν αυτό το «σκωτσέζικο ντους» .Πέρα για πέρα , φουσκωμένο με ανωτέρα αισθήματα ,με εναλλαγές ρόλων μεταξύ μίσους και εσωστρέφειας.Το μόνο μουσικό παρόραμα είναι, ότι καμιά φορά το μπάσο παραμορφώνει τα ψυχεδελικά σημεία του δίσκου .Πιες το μονορούφι, ώστε η τέχνη να σε βαρέσει κατακούτελα. Πολύ καλοί.

Welkin Dusk are hailing from the U.S mid west. Their name brings us memories of our favourite Emperor's album. I think that the vocals performed by Louis actually do resemble the ones from Ihsahn. I would say that this album has no ornaments and shit, which is quite pleasing. I think that it's Mike's guitarplay that  adds amounts of talent into this one. He performs both slow and fast parts with ease. That doesn't mean that the remaining memders fall back of course. This album is full of higher feelings and constant swaps between hate and self-contemplation. The only drawback is that sometimes the bass deforms the album's phsycedelic parts. This is pure art. Really good album.

Οι Deafheaven επανέρχονται με ένα εξαιρετικό album. Την παράσταση ανοίγει η καταιγιστική κομματάρα Dream House, που αποτελεί ένα διαμάντι ατμοσφαιρικού blackgaze. To όμορφο instrumental κομμάτι σε πιάνο, Irresistible, στρώνει το δρόμο για το αριστούργημα Sunbather,που δικαίως φέρει τον τίτλο του δίσκου καθώς αποτελεί το καλύτερο κομμάτι του. Ακολουθεί ένας πειραματικός συνδυασμός spoken φωνητικών σε noise φόντο με ένα solo ακουστικής κιθάρας για τελείωμα στο Please Remember, το οποίο διαδέχεται το δεκάλεπτο έπος Vertigo, το οποίο όντως προκαλεί μια όμορφη ζάλη και απώλεια του χρόνου. Έπεται το Windows, το μόνο "ουδέτερο" κομμάτι του δίσκου, το οποίο ωστόσο δεν είναι κακό. Ο δίσκος τελειώνει όπως άρχισε, με μια ομοβροντία συναισθημάτων στο The Pecan Tree. Εμβληματική παρουσία από τα drumms σε όλον το δίσκο. Εξαιρετικό album, σίγουρα ένα από τα καλύτερα της χρονιάς.

Deafheaven are making their comeback with an excellent album. The show starts with the brilliant song Dream House, where the band teaches a lesson about how atmospheric blackgaze is performed. The beautiful instrumental piano piece, Irresistible, paves the way for the masterpiece Sunbather, which rightfully bears the album's title, as it is its best track. What follows, is an experimental mix of spoken vocals with a noisy backround combined with an acoustic guitar solo in the end called Please Remember, which is succeded by Windows, probably the only "neutral" track of the album, which is not bad. The album finishes as it started, with a storm of sentiments in the song The Pecan Tree. There is an overwhelming presence of the drumms throughout the whole thing. Excellent album, surely one of the best of 2013 so far.

To Black metal και το Straight Edge, είναι δύο τρόποι έκφρασης που σπάνια συναντιούνται μαζί.

To project Cold Blank Stare,όμως, μας παρουσιάζει ένα ενδιαφέρον μείγμα από δεύτερο κύμα νορβηγικού BM και πολιτικής θεματολογίας. Όμοια με κάποιες από τις επιρροές του, το CBS είναι ένα one-man σχήμα που στον πρώτο του δίσκο παρουσιάζει όλα εκείνα τα στοιχεία που είστε συνηθισμένοι να ακούτε: intros που χτίζουν ατμόσφαιρα, καταιγιστικά riffs, βρώμικα φωνητικά και ωμή παραγωγή.

Ο δεύτερος δίσκος είναι ένα διαφορετικό θέμα. Εδώ υπάρχει μια μεγαλύτερη γκάμα επιρροών και στιχουργικών θεμάτων και η παραγωγή είναι κάπως καλύτερη.

Black Metal and Straight Edge are two expressions that usually don't come together.

Cold Blank Stare, however, brings an interesting second wave Norwegian BM, mixed with political themes. Similar to some of the influences, CBS is an one-man band that presents in its first record all that what you are used to hear: mood building intros, repetitive riffs, harsh vocals nad raw production.

The second record is a different matter. There is a wider range influences and the lyrical themes and the production is a little better.

Οι Vestiges σχηματίστηκαν το Γενάρη του 2010 και έχουν κυκλοφορήσει ένα album και τρία split, με τελευταίο αυτό με τους Panopticon που κυκλοφόρησε φέτος. Μουσικά η μπάντα έχει ένα μείγμα hardcore, crust, black metal, d-beat και post-metal επιρροών, το οποίο όμως μορφοποιεί σε πολύ ωραία μουσική. Η μπάντα στιχουργικά εξερευνεί τη σχέση του ανθρώπου με τη φύση και πως εκείνος την καταστρέφει. Οι κυκλοφορίες της αποτελούν μια εξιστόρηση αυτής της κατάστασης που βαίνει προς την εξαφάνιση της ανθρωπότητας. Εξαιρετική μπάντα και εξαιρετικό το split με Panopticon όπως και το full-length "The Descent of Man".

Vestiges were formed in January 2010 and have released one album and three splits, with the one with Panopticon being the most recent one. Musically the band has a variety of hardcore, black metal, crust, d-beat and post-metal influences which works out pretty well though.Lyrically the band narrates the destructive relationship between man and nature. Excellent band and a great split with Panopticon. Also check out their kick-ass full length, "The Descent of Man".

Οι τύποι και σ΄ αυτόν τον δίσκο παίζουν τις κάλτσες τους .Σαρωτικές συνθέσεις που δίνουν στο Black Metal ένα μοντέρνο ήχο ακόμα και αν αυτό το θηρίο βγήκε από την πιο παρθένα σπηλιά της Cascadia . Συνθέσεις σαν το Dirge/Purgation έχουν  μια Doom-ίζουσα σύμπραξη που φανερώνει παράστημα πολλών κυβικών. Το Oblivion’Spring δείχνει το δρόμο για το πώς παίζεται το <<music occultism>>.Αν και στα EP’s δεν  δίνεται η πρέπουσα σημασία από το ευρύ κοινό, εδώ πρέπει να δοθεί έμφαση γιατί μιλάμε για  θησαυρό. Απολαύστε υπεύθυνα γιατί το έργο είναι ακατάλληλο για ‘’κάφρους’’ .Αλλά για φιλόμουσα αυτιά .Οι περίεργοι δεν θα κακοπέσουν. Και λίγα είπα...

Before i start to write anything, we have to say that this blog loves Cascadian Black Metal. So yes we might not be too objective. This album kicks ass! Massive compositions that give Black Metal a modern sound even if this beast came out from the virgin caves of Cascadia. Songs like Dirge/Purgation have a doom-like touch that reveals that these guys know what they are doing. Oblivion's Spring shows how "music occultism" is properly performed. Although eps dont get the right amount of attention from the fans, this ons should because its a treasure. Enjoy responsibly cause this one ain't for everyone. This is Art. And i didn't say enough...

Οι Sadhaka είναι μια τετραμελής μπάντα που σχηματίστηκε το 2012 και αυτή είναι η πρώτη της κυκλοφορία. Στη μπάντα συμμετέχουν μέλη από τις μπάντες Fauna, Mollehoj και Vradizei οπότε μπορούμε να πούμε μάλλον με ασφάλεια ότι είναι από τη δική μας πλευρά.

Sdhaka is a four-piece act, formed in 2012 and this their first release. The band is a side project of members of Fauna, Mollehoj and Vradizei so we could  say they are on our side.

One-man σχήμα που δημιουργήθηκε το 2010 και παίζει μεγάλες, καλοπαιγμένες και πανέμορφες συνθέσεις. Συνολικά πέντε κυκλοφορίες, οι περισσότερες από τις οποίες έχουν γίνει ανεξάρτητα και με ιδία μέσα. Προτείνεται ιδιαίτερα στους fan του Blackgaze και του Experimental black metal.

One-man band playing long, well-executed, beautiful compositions. Five releases overall, most of them self-released. Highly recommended for Blackgaze and Experimental black metal fans.
